What do you do when someone asks you for your business card? Do you simply exchange cards, and then place their card into your pocket? If so, and without maybe realizing it, you just missed an opportunity to use your business card to increase your sales and marketing power.

When someone gives you their business card, hold on to it and study it for a few seconds - strive not give it a generic glance and then place the card into your pocket or card-case. Instead, show some interest in what is presented/printed on the card. If their card states that they are a "Senior Sales Associate" - (and you did not know this) state that to them. "Oh, you are a ....... Excellent!" or a similar compliment/positive comment like that. The card giver will very much appreciate the fact that you show some interest in the card.

Then follow this up with a second thought - "May I please give you a few extra business cards in case you know of others that might need my products/services." With one short action, you have just increased the sales and marketing power of your business cards by many factors.

In many Asian nations, it is customary to present one's business cards to a recipient with both hands. If you are presented a business card with both hands, strive to reciprocate in kind.

A former colleague of mine liked prestidigitation. At many sales and marketing events, he would capture the attention of prospective client and customers by magically turning a blank business card into his business card with just a few movements of his hand. He did this fast enough, so that no one really saw how the trick was performed. He ended his performance by telling the recipient "to let the card dry for a few moments, as the ink may still be wet." Guaranteed - everyone remembered him in a positive way, everyone talked about him (and the company he worked for) and he obtained many, many sales for his small, but clever investment. It is something that worked for him.

A business card may be small, but it has an incredibly strong potential as a sales and marketing tool. How have you used a business card to your marketing advantage?
